In the realm of grief, our relationship with food can undergo profound transformations. As a fellow traveler on this path, I’ve experienced the highs and lows of a food and eating journey intertwined with grief, trauma, and postpartum depression. In this heartfelt article, I want to share with you a side of my story that you won’t find in other places—a story of resilience, self-discovery, and the healing power of food. Through my own experiences, I invite you to explore the transformative practice of mindful eating and discover a haven for your grieving heart at Serenity’s Solace.
A Battle with Postpartum Depression and the Journey to Real Food
At the age of 24, facing the challenges of postpartum depression, I sought healing through holistic approaches, including a focus on real food. However, despite my efforts, my depression took a dangerous turn, leading me to confront suicidal thoughts. It was during my time in the psychiatric unit that I stumbled upon a book that would forever change my perspective—”You Are Not What You Weigh.”
Within the pages of that book, I began a profound journey of self-love and acceptance.
Grief, Weight, and the Healing Power of Real Food
The tragic loss of my husband and one of my twin daughters sent shockwaves through my life. Grief weighed heavy on my heart, and I found solace in food. Gradually, I saw the numbers on the scale increase as I grappled with what I now refer to as “Grief Weight.” But it was another pivotal moment—undergoing brain surgery for Chiari I Brain Malformation—that redefined my relationship with food.
In the aftermath of the surgery, my doctor advised me to focus on consuming only real food, and that journey became a lifeline.
